Brucella is a gram-negative bacteria.They are extremely small. It is an intracellular parasite. Brucella causes brucellosis. It is transmitted by consuming infected food, direct contact with an infected animal, or inhalation of aerosols. Transmission from human to human through sexual activity or from mother to child is rare, although it is possible. Brucellosis usually occurs from exposure to Brucella which one receives as a result of working with animals. However, it can be transmitted through unpasteurized milk. There are a few different species of Brucella. Most common are Brucella abortus which infects cattle. Brucella suis which infects pigs. And Brucella melitensis which infects goats and sheeps.
